Dr. Akhtar Ali
Dr. Akhtar Ali is a distinguished professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Tulsa, where he has been teaching Experimental Techniques in Molecular Biology since 2007. Renowned for his dedication to both research and education, Dr. Ali has taught a diverse range of advanced courses to both undergraduate and graduate students, including Introduction to Virology, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Biology of Cancer, and Cannabis Botany and Molecular Biology, inspiring generations of students and researchers in the life sciences.
An internationally recognized scientist, Dr. Ali’s research focuses on molecular biology, virology, and mycoviruses—viruses that infect fungi. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious U.S. Fulbright Fellowship to conduct collaborative research at Okayama University in Japan, further advancing global understanding of fungal viruses and their biological significance.
Dr. Ali’s scholarly contributions include more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 12 book chapters, and the co-edited volume titled Pepper Virome: Diversity, Evolution, and Management (Elsevier, USA). His expertise has led to invitations to speak at more than 30 national and international institutions while presenting his research at over 27 international and more than 100 national scientific conferences worldwide.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to research, education, and global collaboration, Dr. Ali received the 2025 Outstanding Researcher Award from the University of Tulsa, the 2025 Research Excellence Award from the Oxley College of Health and Natural Sciences, and the 2025 Faculty Champion for Global Engagement Award from the Center for Global Education. In 2023, he was also honored with the Zelimir Schmidt Outstanding Researcher Award for his exceptional impact on scientific discovery and innovation.
