Annabelle Hickson
Annabelle Hickson, editor of Galah, didn’t initially plan to live in regional Australia. However, after falling in love with a farmer from western NSW, she decided to give it a try. While she anticipated some sacrifices, such as her journalism career at The Australian and the convenience of city life, she discovered many new opportunities.
As her husband Ed planted pecan trees, Annabelle cared for their three children, wrote a monthly column for Country Style Magazine, and published her book, A Tree in the House, which gained international recognition.
Annabelle began to understand the meaning of community and saw smart, resilient people who focused on possibilities rather than limitations, challenging the stereotypes she had previously held.
Twelve years after moving west, as the drought of 2019-2020 subsided, Annabelle sought stories from regional Australia that went beyond disadvantage. While acknowledging the challenges of water scarcity, job shortages, and other limitations, she wanted to highlight the beauty, freedom, and opportunities that also existed. She desired a publication that acknowledged the intelligence, diversity, and values of people in regional Australia, bridging the gap between city and country. Thus, she created Galah magazine. This book is a collection of the best content from that acclaimed biannual magazine.
