Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931)
Arthur Schnitzler was an Austrian author and dramatist. Born in Vienna, the capital of the Austrian Empire, Schnitzler was descended from two prominent Jewish families. His mother was Luise Markbreiter and his father was the renowned Johann Schnitzler.
Following in the footsteps of his father and maternal grandfather, Schnitzler pursued a career in medicine, completing his doctorate at the University of Vienna and beginning work at Vienna’s General Hospital. However, this path was short-lived. Over the next decade, Schnitzler’s interest in medicine waned, and he decided to forge a career as a writer.
Beginning with his first play, Anatol (1893), Schnitzler went on to publish over a dozen works. His most notable include the controversial play Reigen (1897), the sensual novella Rhapsody: A Dream Novel (1926), and the socio-political novel The Road into the Open (1908). He became known for his frank explorations of sexuality, his commitment to writing “of love and death,” and his strong stance against antisemitism.
