Summary

The Sun experiences 22-year cycles where its magnetic poles reverse every 11 years, giving rise to sunspots.

In 1801, William Herschel suggested that the price of wheat in London was indirectly controlled by sunspots, based on his personal observations that less rain fell when there were few spots. Seasonal flooding of Lake Chad followed an 11-year cycle that influenced rain in the catchment area.

In 1977, Herman and Goldberg compiled Sun, Weather, and Climate to expl…

About The Author

Barry Campbell

The author was always encouraged as a child to have hobbies, including entomology and chemistry. Though his school didn’t teach chemistry, his hobby allowed him to join an A-level chemistry class at technical college. After pursuing physics, maths, and chemistry A-levels, he earned a physics degree from the University of Kent at Canterbury.

During a long vacation term before his third year, reading Sverdrup’s ‘The Oceans’ sparked an interest in oceanography. This led to a job involving torpedo trials, where he worked as a sonar signal processor and performed modeling using Fortran.

A career change to cost engineering involved developing cost analysis software and costing leading-edge products such as infra-red seekers, fuzes, linescans, and cryogenic engines. His work in manufacturing process modeling, utilizing databases and spreadsheets, covered areas like titanium superplastic forming, thick film ceramic circuit manufacturing, robotics, and flexible manufacturing.

Returning to systems engineering, he evaluated leading-edge systems engineering tools. This was followed by a brief period in railway systems engineering, then the development of defensive aids systems and the analysis and documentation of future fast jet radar.

Upon retirement, he took up book indexing, following the path of a cherished aunt and uncle, and developed software for book indexing. Reading history and re-reading his university physics and chemistry textbooks fueled a curiosity about oxygen isotopes in Atacama Desert nitrates, which ultimately led to this book.
