About The Author

Ben Jonson

Ben Jonson (1572 or 1573-1637) was a prolific poet and playwright born in London. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, many of Jonson’s plays were performed by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company. He married Anne Lewis in 1594, and the couple gained influence in London and Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1616, Jonson achieved a groundbreaking feat by collecting his entire works for publication in a single volume. That same year, he was appointed poet laureate and received a pension from King James I.
