Dr. Carl M. Allen
Dr. Carl M. Allen is Emeritus Professor at The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry, where he dedicated 36 years to teaching. Following his retirement from academia, he furthered his career by practicing with a dermatology group, subsequently transitioning to an otolaryngology group. Two of his former residents eventually took over this practice, marking his final retirement.
Dr. Allen earned his DDS from Ohio State in 1975. He completed his training in oral and maxillofacial pathology at Indiana University from 1978 to 1980. Throughout his distinguished career, he has been actively involved in clinical patient care, evaluating individuals referred for oral disease. He also played an integral role in affiliated oral and maxillofacial biopsy services, examining microscopic tissue sections from the patients he saw.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 1983, Dr. Allen served a six-year term as Editor of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 1994 to 2000. He held the position of President of the AAOMP in 2004 and served as a Director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 2005 to 2013.
Dr. Allen has authored over 125 peer-reviewed articles in dental and medical journals. He has also contributed chapters on oral disease to textbooks in the fields of otolaryngology, microbiology, dermatology, and surgical pathology. His significant contributions to the literature include co-editing the textbook, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology by Neville, Damm, Allen and Chi (currently in its fifth edition), and the Color Atlas of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases by the same authors, published in 2019. In 2026, he authored Oral Disease: Case Studies of Difficult Diagnoses.
