About The Author

Bryan Gould

Bryan Gould has been exploring wildscapes since he was a boy. Along the way, from the earliest days, he has been intrigued by all aspects of the biological world and finds the natural environment a never-ending source of fascination. His personal ‘wild’ journeys - particularly across Britain, Europe, America and Australasia - invariably involve botanising, walking and mountaineering. He is a lifelong devotee of Lakeland.

His professional career has concerned plants in general - and trees in particular. From his formative working years in England throughout the 1970s and 1980s (firstly as a commercial climbing arborist and then a local authority manager) Bryan became involved in maintaining and administering citywide tree populations and significant arboreta. In 1988, with his family, he emigrated to Melbourne, Australia to oversee large-scale municipal parks and trees - and then, in 1994, relocated to Auckland, New Zealand to continue similar roles in high-profile civic landscape management. He currently lives in Queensland, where he consults and teaches aspects of arboriculture.

Bryan has led the conservation and enhancement of urban forests in several developing cities - always seeking to enhance and strengthen the quality of trees within cityscapes. He frequently advises independent tree care practices and public open space management agencies regarding both individual iconic tree specimens and major national botanical and garden collections. His knowledge of tree biology, morphology and physiology has provided expertise in numerous tree care (and misadventure) cases.

With a wealth of real-world experience, Bryan’s master’s studies in arboriculture, environmental management and horticulture have expanded his appreciation for how plants function and interrelate to other organisms within complex biodiverse ecosystems.

Through formal curricula and personalised teaching forums, Bryan has facilitated the learning of cohorts of vocational and tertiary arboriculture students and skilled urban forest managers. His approach is to explain the intricacies of plant life, combined with operational plans and strategic policies, in ways that enhance organisational tree care management. His method is to draw the trainee and the expert together by describing facts and principles as an overview, whilst delving into essential details that highlight key aspects. His intention is to provide enlightenment and enthusiasm to novice and veteran arborists alike.

As an independent specialist - through his consultancy, writing, presentations and workshops - he has motivated many arboriculture and landscape practitioners to acknowledge the complexity, importance and magnificence of trees. As an advocate, Bryan continues to promote the benefits and values of urban trees and natural forests in our changing world - and the interrelated ecological, environmental, physical and psychological services they provide to people and nature.
