About The Author

Campbell Johnstone

Campbell Johnstone is a former All Blacks and Crusaders prop who, in January 2023, became the first All Black to publicly come out as gay, an announcement that gained global attention. A three-test All Black and Crusaders forward, he also played for Biarritz and the Ospreys. He is now an internationally recognized advocate for authenticity, inclusion, and leadership in male-dominated fields.

Campbell played provincial rugby for Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury, and Tasman. He played Super Rugby for the Crusaders and represented the All Blacks in 2005, including two tests against the British and Irish Lions. He had a professional career in Europe with Biarritz (2008-2012) and the Ospreys (2012-2013) before retiring in 2014.

In January 2023, he publicly shared his story on TVNZ’s Seven Sharp. He married his partner, Ben Thomson, in 2024.
