About The Author
Carl M. Allen
Dr. Carl M. Allen
Dr. Carl M. Allen is Emeritus Professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where he taught for 36 years. Upon retirement, he practiced with a dermatology group, followed by an otolaryngology group. Two of his former residents eventually took over this practice, at which point Dr. Allen retired definitively.
Dr. Allen received his DDS from Ohio State in 1975 and completed his training in oral and maxillofacial pathology at Indiana University from 1978 to 1980. Throughout his career, he saw patients referred for evaluation of oral disease and actively participated in affiliated oral and maxillofacial biopsy services, examining microscopic tissue sections from these patients.
He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in 1983. Dr. Allen served as Editor of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 1994 to 2000. He was President of the AAOMP in 2004 and served as a Director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 2005 to 2013.
Dr. Allen has published over 125 refereed articles in dental and medical journals and has written chapters on oral disease for textbooks in otolaryngology, microbiology, dermatology, and surgical pathology. His significant contributions to the field include co-editing the textbook Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology by Neville, Damm, Allen, and Chi (currently in its fifth edition), co-authoring the Color Atlas of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases (published in 2019), and authoring Oral Disease: Case Studies of Difficult Diagnoses (published in 2026).
