Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831)
Carl von Clausewitz was a Prussian military officer and military theorist. Born into a noble family from Upper Silesia, he followed his father’s footsteps by entering military service as a lance-corporal at a young age. He served in several major conflicts throughout his life, including the Rhine Campaigns and the Napoleonic Wars, eventually reaching the rank of general.
In 1801, he entered the Kriegsakademie in Berlin, where he studied philosophy, and the history and tactics of warfare. This research would later form the basis for his seminal work, On War, published posthumously in 1832. This treatise examines the moral, political, and social aspects of warfare.
In 1810, he married Countess Marie von Brühl, an aristocrat and socialite. She was a highly educated and driven woman who oversaw the posthumous publication of On War, meticulously editing Clausewitz’s manuscript and writing the introduction.
Clausewitz was a decorated and ambitious soldier and leader. He served in campaigns throughout Europe for both the Prussian and Imperial Russian Armies. He also spearheaded efforts to contain the cholera outbreak that would eventually claim his life.
His theories on war continue to be studied by scholars and military officials today. Clausewitz is renowned for his philosophical outlook and his definition of war as an extension of political policy.
