Carne Ross
Carne Ross is a writer, diplomatic strategist, and anarchist.
As a British diplomat, Carne served in Germany, Norway, Afghanistan, Kosovo, the UK Mission to the UN in New York, and as a speechwriter to two Foreign Secretaries. His diplomatic work spanned terrorism, the global environment, Israel/Palestine, the Middle East, and the UN’s efforts concerning Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction. He was involved in the context of five or six wars.
In 2004, Carne resigned from the Foreign Office after providing secret evidence to the first official inquiry into the Iraq War. His testimony highlighted that the Blair government had misrepresented the threat from Iraq and overlooked alternatives to military action. Despite facing threats of prosecution under the Official Secrets Act and public criticism from government ministers, the eventual public release of his testimony in 2007 contributed to the establishment of the ‘Chilcot Inquiry’, to which Carne also provided evidence.
Following his resignation, Carne founded Independent Diplomat, the world’s first non-profit diplomatic advisory group. Independent Diplomat collaborates with democratic nations, political factions, and liberation movements globally, including in Kosovo, Yemen, Syria, Ukraine, Myanmar, Western Sahara, Sudan, and Mali. The organization played a key role in assisting the Marshall Islands in forming the High Ambition Coalition, which was instrumental in shaping crucial aspects of the 2016 Paris climate agreement, such as the 1.5°C target. Independent Diplomat pioneered the practice of facilitating direct meetings between conflict protagonists on the UN Security Council’s agenda and UN Security Council diplomats.
Carne continues to work as a diplomatic adviser and strategist, notably for the self-governing autonomous region of northeast Syria, Rojava. He also writes and comments on global affairs, political transformation, and anarchism.
He is actively working to establish a global network of ‘communalist’ democracy, aiming to realize his vision of self-governance and individual autonomy, free from state control and capitalist culture. This philosophical pursuit, rooted in anarchism, seeks to overcome the crises and despair prevalent in the modern world.
