Critics Review
Little Wombat and his friends are fast becoming a preschool favourite series as not only are the creatures familiar and seemingly the same age as they are, they do the sorts of things that little ones do while there is always a subtle message to gently absorb as they read –this one about being safe when messing about on boats. But even if they haven’t spent a birthday on a boat, nevertheless young readers will have plenty of stories to share about their own birthday celebrations and wishes while there is also the opportunity to learn about calendars, months and making a graph of who celebrates when with each creating a candle or a cupcake to add to the relevant column. – Barbara Braxton * The Bottom Shelf *
Charles Fuge
Charles Fuge (Charlie to his friends) was brought up in Bath where a fanatical interest in wildlife translated into the drawing of animals. Once at Camberwell School of Art (where he was tutored by woodcutter John Lawrence), he went on to win the Macmillan Prize in 1988 for Bush Vark’s First Day Out. This went on to win the Mother Goose Award the following year, and a career in children’s book illustration began.
Charles Fuge has since illustrated nearly 60 picture books, including Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball which was runner-up for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2001.
He lives in Dorset with his partner and son, and continues to write and illustrate for children.
