Summary

How do we develop our identity when growing among so many worlds?

There is no single answer, just like there is no single, cookie-cutter, cross-cultural childhood. But for those of us who grew up between cultures, we share certain feelings, experiences, and ways of viewing the world. By examining these commonalities and how our cross-cultural upbringing shaped us, we deepen our understanding of ourselves and those around us. We can make sense of our own story.

Critics Review

When I first read the second edition twenty years ago, I was deeply grateful to finally find language to understand my childhood story. Offering many excellent new insights in this fourth edition, the authors extend a compassionate invitation to reflect on the experience of growing up among worlds, reminding us that our stories are grounded in our shared humanity… It is also about giving permission and time to grieve parts of ourselves that shift with each loss and how to learn to live with it. This remains essential reading for anyone seeking to make sense of cross-cultural journeys, their own or that of others, and how it shapes our sense of roots, identity, and belonging. * Valérie Besanceney, author, B at Home: Emma Moves Again and My Moving Booklet, Founder of Roots with Boots and International Advisor to the Council of International Schools (CIS) *
This phenomenal book is both a mirror and a map: helping readers feel seen, less alone, and better equipped for the journey ahead. With warmth, clarity, and real stories from real people, it gives language to parts of the TCK and CCK experience that so many have felt deeply but never quite known how to name. This expanded edition brings even more voices and wisdom to the table, welcoming even more readers and reminding them that their story is part of something much bigger. * Christopher O’Shaughnessy, international speaker, comedian, and author of Arrivals, Departures, and the Adventures in Between. *
The authors have once again made a valuable contribution to the ongoing discussion on Third Culture Kids with this new book. This edition provides fresh insights, clarifying examples, and thoughtful scholarly research, drawing on the wisdom of the field’s early professionals while introducing the perspectives of today’s emerging scholars. It is a significant addition to the literature on TCKs. * Lois Bushong, Retired Marriage & Family Therapist, Transition Coach, Adult TCK, Author of Belonging Everywhere & Nowhere: Insights into Counseling the Globally Mobile *
Few books have the levity and longevity to be not just as relevant but more relevant today than when first published almost three decades ago. This book is the exception. Now with more research, more voices, more stories and more ‘layers’ than ever, it’s the book you need to own, yes, even if you own earlier editions. Now with more contributors than ever and the addition of Cynthia Green, I guarantee its content will surprise and enlighten you. * Jo Parfitt, journalist, speaker, publisher, and author of A Career in Your Suitcase *
More than a fourth edition, this is a bold reimagining of a classic. By expanding the lens from Third Culture Kids to the wider world of T/CCKs, the authors reveal the surprising commonalities shared by children growing up between cultures, languages, identities, and worlds. Honoring both the ‘movers’ and the ‘stayers,’ this groundbreaking work is insightful, inclusive, forward-looking, and destined to shape the conversation for years to come. * Jessica Sanfilippo-Schulz, PhD, lecturer in intercultural awareness at FH Münster University of Applied Sciences, Germany *
Rooted in movement, shaped by many worlds. Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds remains a seminal and authoritative contribution to the study of globally mobile populations. In this 4th edition, Van Reken, Green, and Pollock provide a timely and theoretically robust exploration of the evolving realities of Third Culture Kids (TCK) in an increasingly interconnected world. This edition is an essential resource for scholars, practitioners, educators, and organizations seeking to better understand and support individuals navigating lives across cultures. * Anastasia Aldelina Lijadi, PhD, Psychologist and scholar on place identity construction of TCK International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis *
This is a well-researched yet wholly practical book for all those who are themselves relating to different cultures which are new to them or supporting students, families and adults doing the same. The case studies throughout enrich and bring the text to life. Many readers will find them a source of challenge, inspiration and self-help, It’s an important read for all schools, not just so-called international schools, to help understand and better support individuals and families in celebrating their identity while flourishing in cross-cultural contexts. * Graham Ranger, EdD , Education Advisor to the Aga Khan Schools (AKS). Formerly Director of Education for AKS, Director of the Aga Khan Academies and Director of Accreditation for the Council of International Schools (CIS). *
The fourth edition of Third Culture Kids is the book the field has been waiting for. It captures what my own experience and research keep confirming: that the grief, identity disruption, and delayed emotional processing so many TCKs live with are still too often invisible, even to the clinicians meant to help them. This edition doesn’t just update the conversation. It deepens it, with the honesty and care that only comes from decades of truly listening. * Karina Lagarrigue, PhD, Adult Third Culture Kid, Psychologist, and Founder of Emigra Leadership *
This 4th edition returns to a focus on children growing up cross-culturally and happily debunks the misleading notion that the TCK experience is the exclusive domain of global north children who grow up internationally. It is enriched by the inclusion of many individual stories from around the world which recognizes the increasingly complex and culturally diverse world in which children move and live. It validates and celebrates the truly global nature of the TCK/ CCK experience. * John Barclay, DMin., AMK; ex-Principal of Hebron School; International TCK advisor for Interserve (2004-2016); advocate for Asian MKs (2004 to present) *
This 4th edition of Third Culture Kids manages to capture the splendor and rich diversity of experiences for children who grow up cross-culturally while also doing the seemingly impossible-joining these stories into common themes that resonate for all. I felt personally seen in my multi-layered cross-cultural story and know many others will as well. A monumental work! * Rhoda Bangerter, author of Holding the Fort Abroad: Beyond Surviving - Living and Parenting Abroad with a Partner Who Works Away from Home *
Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds is far more than a book… it’s a gift to internationally mobile families and the professionals who support them. This fourth edition brings together decades of wisdom, research and lived experience to illuminate the joys, complexities and hidden losses of growing up between cultures. As Ruth Van Reken’s final contribution to the field she helped shape, this book feels both timeless and deeply relevant * Vivian Chiona, Founder of Expat Nest—online counseling for expat families. *
This is essential reading for international school leaders. It gives language to what many of our students experience but cannot always explain: the complexity of belonging to many places and not fully belonging to any one of them. As a parent of third culture kids, I found it deeply personal. As an educator, I found it immediately practical. * Michael Iannini, SPAN Governor and PD Academia Managing Director *
In a world of shifting global dynamics, this fourth edition of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Amongst Worlds is both timely and necessary - a hope-full, empathetic, and refreshingly honest exploration of the many layered ways children grow up cross-culturally. It draws on the legacy and expertise of leading voices in global mobility and cross-cultural fields, while retaining the rich diversity of stories that make this work so compelling. Both research-informed and authentically human, it is essential reading not only for educators, parents, and professionals supporting cross-cultural kids, but also for young people growing up among worlds who seek to explore and better understand their own experiences and identity. This book invites reflection and will continue to inform, challenge, and inspire across generations. * Jane Barron, Transitions-Care and Mobility Consultant and Researcher. Council of International Schools (CIS) *

What began as a groundbreaking exploration of the Third Culture Kid experience has evolved into something even more expansive. While rooted in the experiences of those who grow up among cultural worlds, its deeper insights speak to universal human questions of identity, belonging, connection, loss, resilience, and meaning.

In an increasingly interconnected and culturally complex world, this book offers language for experiences that are often deeply felt but difficult to name. This edition is a significant contribution to the evolving conversation about culture, identity, belonging, and the lifelong impact of growing up among cultural worlds.

* Paulette Bethel, PhD, psychologist, speaker, author, and creator of the Identity Disruption & Reorientation Framework™ *
The third edition of Third Culture Kids was a ‘holy bible’ during my dissertation process. I am now absolutely honoured to be cited in the fourth edition. This is a brilliant new edition and an incredibly important piece of work for TCKs, their parents, and educators. The book is written in an engaging style, and I truly hope it reaches those navigating life around the world, balancing the emotions that come with belonging to many places at once. * Dr. Mireka Caselius, University of Jyväskylä, Finland *
