What They're Saying
Critics Review
“Like the best Marx Brothers routines, [this book] set[s] up a premise that unravels, with escalating absurdity, while kid listeners are given the satisfaction of knowing more than the story’s narrators.Bernstrom’s rhyming verses … have a rollicking energy perfect for reading aloud, and Scott gives his characters a goofy, cartoonish appeal….they make both kids and grownups laugh [and] grant children a rare authority over the story, allowing and even encouraging young readers to know more than the characters about what’s actually going on. “—The New Yorker
“A celebration of bravery against a big bully… [with] upbeat emphasis on the rollicking rhythm and rhymes and the vibrant undersea setting.” —Kirkus Reviews
“A little girl searches for pearls under the sea when a shark comes along. To save herself, she makes a deal to find him something for his dinner in this clever story similar to folktales such as Margaret Read McDonald’s The Fat Cat (2001). The text has a Seuss-like jaunty rhyme with repetition… This will work well as a readaloud and as a way of showing a number of ocean animals.”—BayViews, the monthly review publication of the Association of Children’s Librarians of Northern California (ACL)
