Critics Review

Imagine a commentary abreast of all the latest scholarship that wears its learning lightly. Eminently readable, it inserts a judicious selection of key exegetical insights, interpretive debates quickly resolved, and incisive contemporary application. Now make that commentary tackle the ugly stepchild of the general epistles, the Letter of James, in a way that makes you feel good about it again. Tie a bow around it and you have Daniel Eng’s new commentary on James. For such a quick read, you’ll come out really knowledgeable and challenged by this little letter! – Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Denver Seminary, Littleton, CO
In this superb commentary on the Epistle of James, Daniel Eng offers thoughtful exegesis and insightful application that will help readers engage with the historical, literary, and theological aspects of the epistle. Eng’s work serves as a faithful guide for pastors, church leaders, and students to not only grasp the meaning and significance of this important New Testament letter, but also to be better prepared to respond to the trials and tribulations of life . Highly recommended! – David S. Dockery, President and Distinguished Professor of Theology, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
Daniel Eng rightfully discerns a thoughtful structure to the book of James, based on the three inclusios that frame the content. He defines an inclusio as “a literary device that uses repeated words to bracket the intervening content into a unit of thought.” Recognizing this structure will change how we preach James-instead of approaching it as a miscellaneous ‘string of pearls’, we will sequentially unfold its theme-“the value of persevering in faithfulness with the end times in view.” Every preacher will be grateful for this fine commentary. – Donald R. Sunukjian, Professor of Preaching at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University
This is an excellent commentary on the Epistle of James. It is scholarly, but it is not dense. It do very well written. It will serve well pastors and Bible teachers in the local church. I will be quick to commend its use. – Daniel L. Akin, President, Professor of Preaching & Theology Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
Daniel Eng has quickly become a leading biblical scholar on the Epistle of James and in this volume his pronounced gifts as a scholar-pastor sparkle throughout. Balancing rich exegesis with practical insights, this commentary displays the best of scholarly writing for the academy and the church. I’m so excited for its release. As you pick it up for your preparation to preach and teach, or even for your personal devotional life, you’ll be glad you did, too! – Matthew D. Kim, Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Leadership and Director of the Ph.D. in Preaching Program at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary in Waco, Texas.
There are many good James commentaries and scholars-and Eng is one of them-but this Hodder Commentary is also a delight to read. Some commentaries get bogged down in endless academic squabbles. Eng’s work is exegetically reliable, peppered with insightful analogies, illustrations and charts, and focused on the meaning of the text. A good expositional commentary leaves you with a better understanding of the biblical text, and this one hits the nail on the head. – Nijay K. Gupta, Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary
