About The Author

David Kessler

David A. Kessler, MD, is a paediatrician who served as commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration. He has also been the dean of the medical schools at Yale and the University of California, San Francisco.

During his tenure at the FDA, he introduced several new initiatives, including:

  • Regulation of the marketing and sale of tobacco products to children
  • Nutrition labelling for food
  • Preventive controls to improve food safety

Kessler has received numerous accolades for his contributions to public health. In April 2008, the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, recognized him as the ‘2008 National Hero’ for his leadership as the nation’s top drug regulator and his courage in challenging the U.S. tobacco industry.
