It transports the reader on a colourful journey through some of the animal kingdom’s most spectacular creatures and their namesakes. … The size of the book and detail in the illustrations make the animals seem so realistic.

I love a landscape book. The shelf organisation, maybe not so much. You Stole My Name is a fun rhyming read which looks at animal namesakes. How do animals, some of whom look nothing like those with whom they’re named after, get given their name? 16 pairs of hand painted animals, including; kangaroo and kangaroo rat, parrot and parrotfish, elephant and elephant seal, dog and dogfish, tiger and tiger shrimp.

Through stunning illustrations with details meticulously painted and four lined poems, Dennis McGregor introduces readers to sixteen pairs of animals that share names but not anatomy… A book that will appeal most to both art lovers and animal enthusiasts from around seven years old.

Perhaps it’s just me, but learning about the stories and inspiration behind a book fascinate me. Today’s book has a pretty fun one. The creator painted a turtle on a fence, because, well why not! And then added a bird, which just so happened to be a Turtle Dove. Thus followed a whole exploration of paintings of animals paired with their namesakes! Part work of art and part poetry, this features 16 pairs of animals. There’s Cow and Cowbird, Parrot and Parrotfish & Kangaroo and Kangaroo Rat. And the artwork is simply incredible, with dreamy details and a spark of life that evokes an emotive response. My favourite has to be the Spider Monkey, closely followed by the Rhinoceros Beetle! Do scroll through the photos, both are featured in there! The poetry is a short rhyming stanza for each, which gives an insight into the naming and provides a playful jumping off point for exploring more about the creatures, should you wish.

This is an absolutely stunning large hardback book with the most incredible illustrations. Each picture in the book has been painted and could easily be displayed on the wall. Both of my children were captivated by each page!…

What a stunning book! It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before, bringing 16 clever pairings of animals and their namesakes face to face through incredibly detailed illustrations and poetry.
