Summary

For over 6,000 years, the hoop earring has been humanity’s most dangerous accessory – sparking revolutions, defying empires and redefining power. Circle of Time reveals how this simple circle became the ultimate symbol of resistance, from ancient Egyptian queens who wore them as declarations of divine authority to modern activists who transformed them into weapons of cultural pride. Written by jewellery auteur Donald Edge – who created Sade’s iconic diamond hoop earrings – this is the first book to decode the secret language of the world’s most universal and subversive adornment.

About The Author

Donald Edge

Donald Edge is one of Britain’s most respected private jewellers, with a career spanning four decades. Australian-born, his passion for antique jewellery and design was ignited during his early travels across Europe. After settling in London in 1985, he honed his craft on Bond Street and established his first business on the King’s Road, quickly earning a global reputation.

He has spent decades designing and sourcing jewellery for private clients, global brands, cultural figures like Sade, and public personalities, giving him a front-row view of how identity, memory and culture are carried in what we wear. His fascination goes well beyond materials and technique – he is as captivated by the stories, symbols and histories behind jewellery as the objects themselves. It’s this blend of hands-on expertise, curiosity and cultural perspective that drives his exploration of the hoop earring, tracing its journey from ancient empires to street culture, from sacred emblem to fashion icon.
