Summary

(LARGE PRINT EDITION)

Easwaran’s best-selling translation of this classic Buddhist text The Dhammapada is reliable, readable, and profound.

Dhammapada means “the path of dharma,” the path of harmony and righteousness that anyone can follow to reach the highest good. The Dhammapada is a collection of verses, gathered probably from direct disciples who wanted to preserve what they had heard from the Buddha himself.

Critics Review

“Our favorite translation is Eknath Easwaran’s The Dhammapada. His Indian heritage, literary gifts, and spiritual sensibilities… here produce a sublime rendering of the words of the Buddha. Verse after verse shimmers with quiet, confident authority. A bonus is the sparkling 70-page introduction to the Buddha’s life and teachings that precedes the translation.” – Philip Novak, co-author with Huston Smith of Buddhism: A Concise Introduction

“No one in modern times is more qualified – no, make that ‘as qualified’ – to translate the epochal Classics of Indian Spirituality than Eknath Easwaran. And the reason is clear. It is impossible to get to the heart of those classics unless you live them, and he did live them. My admiration of the man and his works is boundless.” – Huston Smith, author of The World’s Religions

About The Author

Eknath Easwaran

Eknath Easwaran (1910-1999)

Eknath Easwaran brought a unique blend of expertise to his work. He received early training in Sanskrit, a language from which Pali, the language of the Buddha, is derived. He later pursued English literature and served as the chairman of the English department at a prominent Indian university before coming to the United States on a Fulbright fellowship in 1959. Huston Smith remarked, “His Indian heritage, literary gifts, and spiritual sensibilities here produce a sublime rendering of the words of the Buddha. Verse after verse shimmers with quiet, confident authority.”

In 1961, Easwaran established the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in California. In 1967, he pioneered the first academic course on meditation for credit at a major American university, the University of California, Berkeley. For nearly four decades, he shared his teachings on passage meditation and his eight-point program for spiritual living with audiences in America and internationally. His thirty-three books on meditation and the world’s mystical classics have been translated into twenty-five languages.

From the mid-1970s, Easwaran led classes on the Dhammapada for a largely American audience. As a skilled educator, he possessed the ability to foresee the challenges Western readers might encounter with the concepts inherent in Indian spiritual classics and to articulate them in novel and remarkably straightforward ways. However, for Easwaran, the Dhammapada was more than an intellectual pursuit. He asserted that his primary qualification for interpreting the Dhammapada stemmed from his personal experience of its power to truly transform lives.
