Summary

Among the oldest of India’s spiritual texts, the Upanishads are records of intensive question-and-answer sessions given by illumined sages to their students - in ashrams, at family gatherings, in a royal court, and in the kingdom of Death. The sages share flashes of insight, extraordinary visions, the results of their investigation into consciousness itself. The Upanishads have puzzled and inspired wisdom seekers from Yeats to Schopenhauer.

What They're Saying

Critics Review

“No one in modern times is more qualified – no, make that ‘as qualified’ – to translate the epochal Classics of Indian Spirituality than Eknath Easwaran. And the reason is clear. It is impossible to get to the heart of those classics unless you live them, and he did live them. My admiration of the man and his works is boundless.” – Huston Smith, author of The World’s Religions

About The Author

Eknath Easwaran

Eknath Easwaran (1910-1999)

Eknath Easwaran possessed a unique blend of qualifications. He received rigorous training from childhood within one of India’s most esteemed Sanskrit traditions, granting him an innate understanding of his Hindu heritage. He also held a profound appreciation for Western literature and served as the chairman of the English department at a prominent Indian university before coming to the United States on a Fulbright fellowship in 1959.

Beginning in the 1960s, Easwaran conducted classes on mysticism and practical spirituality for a predominantly American audience. As an exceptional teacher, he adeptly identified the challenges Western readers might face with the core concepts of Indian spiritual classics and presented them with remarkable clarity and profound simplicity.

In 1961, Easwaran established the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in California. In 1967, he taught the first academic course on meditation for credit at the University of California, Berkeley, a first for a major American university. For nearly four decades, he continued to teach passage meditation and his eight-point program for spiritual living to audiences in the United States and internationally. His books on meditation and the world’s mystical traditions have been translated into numerous languages.

Easwaran found deep inspiration throughout his life in the Upanishads and other classics of Indian spirituality. As Huston Smith observed, “it is impossible to get to the heart of those Classics unless you live them, and he did live them.”

Through the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation and its publishing house, Nilgiri Press, Easwaran’s teachings continue to reach an expanding global audience through publications and retreats.
