Critics Review

One in the “You Choose” series, this title focuses on the Revolutionary War and allows readers the opportunity to explore both sides of the conflict as they learn about women in the revolution, early conflicts with British soldiers, the conflict in the southern states, and the beginning of the formation of our nation. Somewhat confusing at first, this approach to historical events presents a far more realistic and problem solving scenario for young readers than the time line approach. The text is written from a young person’s point of view, drawing that aged reader into the action. Young people were often involved in the Revolutionary War. The three choices of story paths allow the reader to experience the responsibilities and emotional toll not only of the leaders of the various events but also those of the average citizen. Period and contemporary illustrations and maps enhance the text, and a time line puts it all in perspective. A glossary, an index, and sources for furthers study are included. A perfect approach for getting the classroom involved in history beyond memorizing dates and events.– “Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database”
