E.M. Forster
Edward Morgan Forster was born in London in 1879 and attended Tonbridge School and King’s College, Cambridge. He maintained a lifelong connection with King’s College, being elected to an Honorary Fellowship in 1946.
Forster was unfailingly modest about his achievements, once stating he was “quite sure I am not a great novelist.” Despite his humility, critics and the public have judged him as one of the most esteemed English novelists of his time.
His six novels include:
- Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905)
- The Longest Journey (1907)
- A Room with a View (1908)
- Howards End (1910)
- A Passage to India (1924), which won the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
- Maurice, a novel on a homosexual theme, finished in 1914 and published posthumously in 1971.
In addition to his novels, Forster’s published works include:
- Two volumes of short stories
- Two collections of essays
- A critical work, Aspects of the Novel
- The Hill of Devi, an account of his visits to the Indian State of Dewas Senior
- Two biographies
- Two books about Alexandria, where he worked for the Red Cross during World War I.

Edward Morgan Forster died in June 1970.
