Also known as Frederick Rolfe and Baron Corvo, Fr. Rolfe converted to Catholicism at the age of twenty-six and attempted to enter the priesthood. After his expulsion from the seminary, he pledged himself to twenty years of celibacy and began writing several semi-autobiographical novels that were simultaneously pious and irreverent. He lived alternatingly in extravagance and squalor, depending on his financial situation, and died bitter and impoverished in Venice.
