George Herbert
Herbert was born on April 3 in Montgomery, Wales, the fifth son of Richard and Magdalen Herbert. His father passed away in 1596, leaving behind his wife, seven sons, and three daughters. Herbert received his education at Westminster School, and later matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge.
In 1612, he contributed memorial poems in Latin, his first published verses, following the death of Prince Henry. By 1616, Herbert was elected major fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He was appointed Reader in Rhetoric at Cambridge in 1618 and Public Orator at Cambridge from 1620 to 1628.
Herbert represented Montgomery in Parliament in both 1624 and 1625. In 1626, he was presented to a prebend in Huntingdonshire, near Little Gidding. The funeral sermon for his mother’s death in 1627, delivered by Donne, included Herbert’s commemorative poem, Memoriae Matris sacrum.
He married Jane Danvers in 1629. In 1630, Herbert was instituted to the rectory at Bemerton near Salisbury in April, and ordained priest in September. He passed away on March 1, 1633, due to consumption, just before his fortieth birthday.
