About The Author
Geshe Lhundub Sopa
Geshe Lhundub Sopa
Geshe Lhundub Sopa is a prominent figure in Buddhist studies and practice. He is the main teacher at Deer Park and the Abbot of Evam monastery. He also holds a position as a Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin.
Born in 1923 in the Tsang province of western Tibet, Geshe Sopa joined the Sera Monastery in Lhasa, where he achieved the highest honors in his Geshe examinations. Following the Tibetan diaspora in 1959, he, like many others including the Dalai Lama, found refuge in India.
In 1962, the Dalai Lama requested Geshe Sopa to accompany three young Tulkus (reincarnate lamas) to America, with the aim of providing them with both Western and Buddhist education. Subsequently, in 1967, he was invited by Professor Richard Robinson, the founder of the Buddhist Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin, to join the Madison campus as a teacher.
