Drugs and Society

Dr. Glen R. Hanson is the Vice Dean of the School of Dentistry and a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Utah. He is also the Senior Advisor for the Mountain Plains PTTC. With approximately 30 years in academia, Dr. Hanson has received over $30 million from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to research the neurobiology of drug abuse. He has authored more than 240 scientific papers and 50 book chapters on the subject and has lectured globally on drug abuse topics. Dr. Hanson previously served as the Director of the Division of Neuroscience and Behavioral Research at NIDA and as NIDA’s Acting Director from 2001 to 2003. He collaborates with scientists, public officials, policymakers, and the public to address drug abuse and addiction.

Dr. Peter J. Venturelli has co-authored this text since the second edition in 1988. His extensive experience includes publishing research in drug and ethnic anthologies and scholarly journals, authoring approximately 60 conference papers for national sociological meetings, and serving in elected and administrative roles within professional sociological and drug research associations. He has received research grants related to drug use and ethnicity, authored the latest drug research, and served on the board of the Baldwin Research Institute. Dr. Venturelli has also dedicated 32 years to teaching undergraduate and graduate students.

Peter Platteborze, Ph.D., joined St. Mary’s University in 2016. He is passionate about teaching students the interdisciplinary nature of Forensic Science and the importance of teamwork in the field. Before his tenure at St. Mary’s, Dr. Platteborze served over 20 years in the active duty U.S. Army as a biochemist. His military career included roles as a principal investigator for defensive research on chemical and biological agents, including work on an Eastern Equine Encephalitis viral vaccine for which he received a U.S. patent. He also served as deputy commander of the Army’s Tripler Forensic Toxicology Drug Testing Lab, branch chief for the Army’s MLT clinical chemistry training program, a postdoctoral clinical chemistry fellow at the University of Washington, program manager for the Army’s Forensic Drug Testing, and Chief and Medical Director of Brooke Army Medical Center’s core labs. He has published extensively across various scientific fields.
