Glen Roberts is the author of A Sniper’s Guide to Long Range Shooting Volume 2, a continuation of his first book. This comprehensive work compiles 32 years of the author’s experience in long-range shooting.
Roberts began his journey at 18, learning long-range variables with a custom .243Win, utilizing DOS Matrix Computer technology and handwritten range cards. From 29 to 47, he served in Police Special Operations Sniping. During the latter part of this period, he owned and operated a training company for snipers and civilians in Australia and New Zealand, focusing on the science and art of long-range shooting. His experiences led him to uncover and debunk common myths prevalent in military and police doctrine.
Over the years, advancements in equipment, particularly optics and laser technology, along with the advent of PDAs with trajectory mapping software, highlighted issues and raised questions about effective methods. This evolution saw the engagement range for military snipers worldwide double, and for police special operations snipers, quadruple. The rise of YouTube provided a platform for sharing knowledge about long-range shooting, previously inaccessible to many. Progress in portable ballistics applications emerged with advancements in computer programming and mobile phone technology. Notable figures like Bryan Litz have contributed through their writings on ballistics and long-range shooting. Civilian competitions, such as the National Rifle League (NRL) Hunter, Precision Rifle Series, and the extreme long-range King of 1 Mile and King of 2 Mile competitions, emerged as a result of the broader interest in sniping.
Roberts was motivated to write this book because he found no single resource that covered his entire journey from start to finish. While extensive information exists on exterior ballistics, rifles, optics, projectiles, laser rangefinders, and terminal ballistic gel tests, this knowledge is often fragmented, sometimes biased through online advertising, or presented in outdated books requiring specialized knowledge.
This book aims to consolidate all necessary information into a single, easy-to-understand resource written in plain language, as if an instructor is present. It caters to novices and professionals alike, featuring images and detailed diagrams to demystify complex subjects.
Volume 2 consists of nine chapters, beginning with an in-depth exploration of recoil management. It further delves into topics such as “The Perfect Zero,” “Winda Calls,” the “Target Engagement process,” “Barrel Harmonics,” “Extreme Long Range (ELR),” “Recoil Dynamics,” “Ballistic Calibration,” and “Advanced Marksmanship Training.” This volume addresses questions that may have arisen from Book 1. It includes meticulously crafted tables for quick and easy understanding of varying conditions, along with anticipated questions and answers.
Each chapter is referenced at the end, indicating the source and timing of some information. However, not all information is referenced, as it stems from Roberts’ personal experience and proven techniques gained over his extensive shooting career. Any information that cannot be scientifically proven is either excluded or presented as an observation for the reader to draw their own conclusions.
