What They're Saying

Critics Review

“Harvey Brownstone’s iconic life story blew me away. The intimacy, the humanity, the courage, the inspiration, and the powerful emotions enveloped me with a mix of love, admiration, and enormous pride.” — Rosalie Abella, retired justice, Supreme Court of Canada
“Harvey Brownstone’s turbulent journey from being a social outcast to becoming Canada’s first openly gay judge makes for a sensational reading experience. This book is heartfelt, poignant, and at times hilarious and clearly proves SUCCESS IS THE BEST REVENGE! I loved it.” — Julian Schlossberg, producer, author, and podcast host
“Harvey Brownstone’s heart-wrenching story of perseverance, resilience, and reinvention brought me to tears one moment and had me laughing out loud the next. His courage and determination to be himself, regardless of the enormous cost, make this book a blueprint for anyone feeling unseen, unappreciated, and unwanted. His fearlessness in tackling the upper echelons of the legal establishment, and then taking on the entertainment industry to become a renowned interviewer, is nothing short of astonishing. I couldn’t put this book down!” — Shane Stanley, multi Emmy Award–winning filmmaker and bestselling author
“This is plain and simple one of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read. It moves seamlessly from heartbreak and tragedy to triumph and hilarity. I’ve known Harvey Brownstone for almost my entire life. For goodness’ sake, once upon a time, he was my babysitter! But there’s so much in here I didn’t know about him, and my already high regard for him has gone even higher. He’s lived an utterly unique life and tells the story brilliantly. I went from tears welling up in my eyes to laughing out loud, often on the same page. A must-read.” — Steve Paikin, journalist, author, podcaster
“A pleasure to read. [Brownstone] writes as if he’s talking candidly with a good friend — openly and with a ready sense of humor. To read Without Prejudice is to spend several enjoyable hours in the company of an extraordinarily kind, caring, and principled human being.” — Jewish Book Council
“A personal reckoning and a sharp critique of the bench he served on for 26 years.” — Canadian Lawyer Magazine
“If you had to name a gay icon, there are probably quite a few who come to mind. So read Without Prejudice: My Life as a Gay Judge by Harvey Brownstone and add another name to your list.” — QnotesCarolinas
“Unabashedly unusual and unapologetically opinionated … I’m hoping the US readers will see what an honest, person-centered, effective and responsible progressive looks like and will start looking for more of them here.” — Expendable Mudge Muses Aloud blog
“An unflinching memoir that takes readers on a poignant and, at times, darkly funny journey behind the scenes of criminal and family courts. Mixing his professional story of judicial innovation with personal reflections on the many challenges he faced over the years, Justice Brownstone paints an autobiographical portrait of resilience.” — Queen’s University Review
