Henry James
Henry James was born on April 15, 1843, in Washington Place, New York. He came from a wealthy and intellectual family and, as a youth, traveled extensively between Europe and America, receiving his education from tutors in Geneva, London, Paris, Bologna, and Bonn.
James briefly and unsuccessfully studied law at Harvard before deciding that he preferred reading and writing fiction. His first novel, Watch and Ward, was published in 1871, after initially appearing serially in Atlantic Monthly.
Following a brief period in Paris, James relocated to London and later settled in Rye, Sussex. In 1915, he became a British citizen, a move intended to express his loyalty to his adopted country and protest America’s neutrality in the war involving Britain.
A prolific writer and critic, James maintained a demanding publication schedule from approximately 1875 until his death in 1916. His diverse body of work includes novels, short story collections, literary criticism, travel writing, biography, and autobiography.
