Dr. Hoang Nguyen

Dr. Hoang Nguyen is a lecturer and researcher at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology in Vietnam. He earned his PhD from the Surface Mining Department at the Mining Faculty of the same institution in 2020. Dr. Nguyen has held visiting researcher positions at Pukyong National University in Busan, Korea, and the Institute of Research and Development at Duy Tan University in Da Nang, Vietnam.

He has authored two books and over 100 papers indexed in databases such as Web of Sciences (SCI, SCIE, SSCI), and serves as an editor for several journals. His research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, optimization algorithms, metaheuristic algorithms, advanced analytics, and their applications in engineering.

Dr. Nguyen’s expertise lies in mining, blasting, geotechnical engineering, environment, natural hazards, and natural resources research. He received the Young Talent Award in Science and Technology from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology in 2019 and was recognized as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists in 2021 and 2022.

Prof. Hai-Thanh Tran

Prof. Hai-Thanh Tran completed his PhD at the University of Regina, Canada, in 2001. Since 2002, he has been a lecturer and researcher in Geology at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Earth Science in 2009 and Professor of Earth Science in 2018.

Prof. Tran is recognized for his pioneering application of comprehensive and qualitative approaches, Plate Tectonic Theory, and modern concepts to regional geological interpretation, tectonic modeling, and the evolution of the Earth’s crust, as well as the relationship between tectonics, Earth resources, and natural hazards in Vietnam and surrounding regions. He is the author and co-author of over 60 scientific papers and 6 books, with more than 30 articles published in international journals and proceedings.

Prof. Emmanuel John M. Carranza

Prof. Emmanuel John M. Carranza began his career as an Exploration Geologist/Geochemist at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Philippines (1983-2001). He was a Researcher (2001-2003) and Associate Professor at the International Institute of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, The Netherlands (2003-2012). He served as an Associate Professor at James Cook University, Australia (2013-2016) and has been an Adjunct Associate Professor there since 2017. Prof. Carranza was a Visiting Professor at the State University of Campinas, Brazil (2015-2017) and has been a Professor of geological sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, since 2017.

His expertise includes geochemistry (for mineral exploration, ore genesis, and geo-environmental studies), spatial mathematics/statistics (for predictive modeling of mineral resources and geological hazards), and remote sensing for geological/mineral exploration. He authored the book “Geochemical Anomaly and Mineral Prospectivity Mapping in GIS” and serves as an editor for several journals.

Assoc. Prof. Jian Zhou

Assoc. Prof. Jian Zhou earned his BSc (2008) and PhD (2015) from Central South University (CSU), China. He was a Visiting Scholar at McGill University’s Mine Design Laboratory (2013-2014). He is currently an associate professor in the School of Resources and Safety Engineering at CSU.

His research interests focus on geological and geotechnical hazards prediction and mitigation, with applications in rock mechanics and mining engineering. Dr. Zhou is recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate - Cross-Field) and a Highly Cited Chinese Researcher (Elsevier - Mining Engineering). He has also received the Distinguished Young Scholars Fund of Hunan Province, China. He has published over 180 papers on mining and geotechnical issues and received awards for his publications, including China’s 100 Most Influential International Academic Papers Award.

Assoc. Prof. Bui Hoang Bac

Assoc. Prof. Bui Hoang Bac completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Mining and Geology in 1999. He obtained a Master’s degree from Paichai University, South Korea (2004), and a Ph.D. from Yonsei University, South Korea (2009). He is currently a faculty member in the Faculty of Geological Sciences and Geoengineering at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Vietnam. He was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Exploration and Mining in 2016.

Assoc. Prof. Bac is the Head of the Department of Exploration Geology and leads the Hitech-CEAE Research Team at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. His research interests include applied geology, clay mineralogy, geostatistics, and GIS. He is the author and co-author of numerous publications and books in these areas.

Prof. Xuan-Nam Bui

Prof. Xuan-Nam Bui received his B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in mining engineering from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) in 1996 and 2001, and his Dr.-Ing. degree in mining engineering from Technische Universitaet Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany, in 2005. He lectured at HUMG from 1996 to 2008. He was appointed Associate Professor and Professor at the Surface Mining Department, HUMG, in 2009 and 2018, respectively. Since 2024, he has been a Visiting Professor at the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources.

Prof. Bui has authored and co-authored 26 books and over 280 papers in international and national journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include advanced mining engineering, environmentally friendly and smart mining, and the use of AI in predicting the impacts of mining and engineering activities on the environment for sustainable development. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mining and Earth Sciences of HUMG and is a member of several professional societies and editorial boards.
