Irina Ratushinskaya, born in Odessa in 1954, is a leading contemporary Russian poet. She spent four years in a labor camp for the religious themes in her poetry, which were deemed ‘anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda’. She smuggled out her poems and, after a series of hunger strikes, was released and came to Britain.
