He is best known for the novels Plt;iPgt;Go Tell It on the MountainPlt;/iPgt; (1953) and Plt;iPgt;GiovanniP#8217;s RoomPlt;/iPgt; (1956), and the collections Plt;iPgt;Nobody Knows My NamePlt;/iPgt; (1961) and Plt;iPgt;The Fire Next TimePlt;/iPgt; (1963). He was an important figure in the civil rights movement, and his books addressing the African-American and gay experiences have influenced generations of writers.
