F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended Princeton University but left in 1917 to join the army, never completing his degree. While stationed in Alabama, he met Zelda Sayre, a socialite he married in 1920 following the success of his novel This Side of Paradise.
The pressures of fame, wealth, and alcohol significantly impacted both F. Scott and Zelda. After Zelda was institutionalized, Fitzgerald relocated to Hollywood in 1937 to work as a scriptwriter and attempt to revitalize his career. His experiences there informed his posthumously published, unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon (1941). Fitzgerald died of a heart attack in Hollywood in 1940.

James L. W. West III, the editor, is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, Emeritus, at Pennsylvania State University. He has authored William Styron: A Life (1998) and The Perfect Hour: The Romance of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ginevra King (2005), among other books. From 1994 to 2019, West served as the General Editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. His variorum edition of The Great Gatsby was the final volume in this series.
