Critics Review

“An emotionally taut, deeply candid coming-of-age story that powerfully reflects the truth every woman knows (but we can certainly forget): It’s worth whatever it takes, whatever price you have to pay, to fully become yourself.”—Jennifer Louden, author of Why Bother?
“A powerful memoir of resilience and self-discovery that will resonate with anyone who has struggled to reconcile family expectations with authentic identity.”—Patricia Grayhall, author of Making the Rounds
“With the candor of Mary Karr and the precision of Joan Didion, Vanneman writes herself free, proving that the most radical act a woman can commit is to stop apologizing for existing as she is.”—Lorinda Boyer, author of Straight Enough
