Born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana, Jim Davis attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
The Garfield comic strip debuted on June 19, 1978, and was initially syndicated in forty-one U.S. newspapers. Today, it is syndicated in more than 2,100 newspapers worldwide, reaching over 200 million readers. This widespread success led Guinness World Records to name Garfield the “Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World.”
Davis’s accolades for Garfield include four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program and induction into the Licensing Hall of Fame in 1998. However, he holds his peers’ recognition from the National Cartoonist Society in the highest regard. These honors include the Best Humor Strip award in 1981 and 1985, the Elzie Segar Award in 1990, and the coveted Reuben Award in 1990 for overall excellence in cartooning.
