Summary
How well do you actually understand war?
For over 2,000 years, military thinkers have tried to explain war; yet no single, coherent theory has ever truly captured how it works. A Theory of War sets out to change that.
This is not a history book. It is not a collection of opinions. It is a clear, structured attempt to define war from first principles; grounded in evidence, not fashion, and built to stand the test of time.

Critics Review
“Jim Storr has written a must-read treatise for anyone seeking to understand war. In an ambitious undertaking, he cuts through the theoretical fads of the last three decades. A Theory of War is destined to be mandatory reading at all worthy military colleges.” - Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, Chief of the Australian Army.
“Jim Storr distils war and warfare to its essence and provides an elegant and pragmatic theory that will intellectually arm those charged with leading and fighting. An essential addition to every soldier’s kit bag and the bookshelves of those who study war.” - Brigadier-General Jason T. Adair, Director General Continental Plans, Canadian Joint Operations Command
“The theory of war and warfare have long suffered from a tension between abstract concepts about imagined futures, doctrine based on the last war, and stark contemporary operational realities. In A Theory of War Jim Storr provides a rigorously argued, empirically based, and refreshingly practical work that restores clarity as to how wars are understood, planned, and fought. With an unsparing focus on organisation, command, adaptation, and human behaviour under pressure, Storr delivers a framework that is both timeless and immediately relevant.
This book rewards serious professionals who care and think deeply about war and warfare. It speaks as directly to military commanders, operational planners, and those responsible for force design and capability planning. A Theory of War deserves to be read and discussed by anyone concerned with the conduct of war in theory or in practice.” - Brigadier Matt Baker OBE, Head of Concepts and Warfare Development, UK Ministry of Defence
“If anyone can write a theory of war, it’s Jim Storr.: - Colonel Richard Iron CMG OBE. Assistant Director, Doctrine Branch, British Army, 2003-5. President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs, 2020-25.
