J.M. Barrie
James Matthew Barrie lived from 1860 to 1937. Born in Scotland to a weaver, he adored his mother, Margaret Ogilvie, who ensured he received an education despite the family’s poverty. In 1885, Barrie moved to London to pursue a literary career, initially writing short stories before achieving success with his plays, which brought him wealth and fame.
He harbored significant nervousness when presenting Peter Pan to his theatrical manager, as it was a children’s fantasy, a departure from his previous work. However, Peter Pan, with its innovative flying and theatrical effects, became a monumental success and remains popular today. In 1911, Barrie adapted the play into a novel, celebrated as one of the most thrilling and magical children’s adventures ever written.
Jack Zipes, who wrote the foreword, is a distinguished scholar of fairy tales. He has authored, translated, or edited numerous books, including The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. Zipes is a professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota.
