John Milton (1608-1674)
Born into a middle-class family in 17th century Britain, John Milton was a poet and man of letters who became involved in the radical politics of his time. He championed the cause of the Puritans and served in Oliver Cromwell’s government. Milton went blind in 1651. Following the restoration of Charles II to the throne of England in 1660, Milton was arrested. However, he was soon released and lived the rest of his life in seclusion, during which time he created some of his greatest works.

Gustave Doré was a French artist and illustrator who worked primarily with wood-engraving. His famed illustrations include those for Milton’s Paradise Lost, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven.
