John Reed
John Reed (1887-1920) was born in Portland, Oregon, into a comfortable family that enabled him to study at the prestigious Harvard University. He was a contributor and editor for various newspapers and magazines, eventually becoming one of the highest-paid journalists of his time in the United States. A war correspondent and chronicler of events involving the American and global labor movements, he was imprisoned on multiple occasions in different countries.
Reed was a firsthand witness to the Mexican Revolution, the Balkan Wars, and the Russian Revolution. His works have become essential classics for understanding 20th-century history. He was a founder of the Communist Labor Party of the United States. Shortly before his thirtieth birthday, he fell ill with typhus and died in Moscow in 1920. With his death, the world lost one of its most lucid chroniclers and an incisive, truthful journalistic style; a legend was also born.
