About The Author
John Tenuto
Maria Jose Tenuto and John Tenuto are sociology professors with twenty-five years of experience. Maria Jose was recognized as the 2019 Illinois Outstanding Adjunct Faculty of the Year by the Illinois Community College Trustee Association. John received the 2020 Association of Community College Trustees’ Central Regional Faculty Member Award, acknowledging him as one of the nation’s top five community college educators.
John’s lifelong fascination with Star Trek began on opening day of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock at Chicago’s Will Rogers Theater, where he secured movie glasses from Taco Bell. The theme from Star Trek: Voyager was their wedding song twenty-six years ago.
Their extensive research on Star Trek has garnered attention from publications like Wired magazine, USA Today, and the Chicago Sun-Times, and has been featured on networks and platforms including CBS, Netflix, WGN, the History Channel, and the BBC.
Together, they authored Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: The Making of the Classic Film (Titan, 2023). They have been invited to present their work at the Official Star Trek Convention, the St. Louis Science Center, Riverside, Iowa (the future birthplace of James T. Kirk), and Vulcan, Alberta, Canada.
Since relocating to Altoona, Iowa, in 2024, they can now humorously claim, “No, I’m from Iowa. I only work in outer space.” They are based in Altoona, Iowa.
