Jon Scieszka

Jon Scieszka is a multiple award-winning author who grew up in Flint, Michigan. He is the second oldest of six boys. Scieszka attended Culver Military Academy in Indiana, Albion College in Michigan (where he studied to be a doctor), and Columbia University in New York, where he earned an M.F.A. in fiction.

He taught elementary school in New York for ten years in various roles. Scieszka is the author of numerous children’s books, including:

• The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales (illustrated by Lane Smith), a New York Times Best Illustrated Book
• The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (illustrated by Lane Smith), a Caldecott Honor book
• Math Curse (illustrated by Lane Smith)

In addition to his writing, Jon runs a web-based literacy program called “Guys Read,” which aims to engage boys, especially reluctant readers, with books. In 2008, he was appointed the nation’s first National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, a collaborative initiative of the Library of Congress and the Children’s Book Council. During his two-year tenure, he served as a prominent advocate for children’s literature, addressing parents, teachers, and children to emphasize the significance of reading.
