Jon Scieszka
Jon Scieszka is a multiple award-winning author who grew up in Flint, Michigan. He is the second oldest and the nicest of six boys. Scieszka’s educational journey included Culver Military Academy in Indiana, where he served as a Lieutenant, Albion College in Michigan, where he studied to be a doctor, and Columbia University in New York, where he earned an M.F.A. in fiction.
For ten years, Scieszka taught elementary school in New York in various positions. He is the author of numerous children’s books, including:
- The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales (illustrated by Lane Smith), a New York Times Best Illustrated Book.
- The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (illustrated by Lane Smith), a Caldecott Honor book.
- Math Curse (illustrated by Lane Smith).
In addition to his writing, Jon Scieszka founded “Guys Read,” a web-based literacy program aimed at encouraging boys, especially reluctant readers, to engage with books. In 2008, he was appointed the nation’s first National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, a program co-sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Children’s Book Council. During his two-year tenure as Ambassador, he served as a spokesperson for children’s literature, advocating for the importance of reading in talks with parents, teachers, and children.
