Summary
Our Olympic Legends, profiling New Zealand’s greatest Olympians, covers a vast range of our sports heroes, from the belatedly acknowledged 1900 water polo player Victor Lindberg to the super-talented Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and her teammates 126 years later at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics. As this book illustrates, New Zealanders have excelled across the full gamut of Olympic sports, and here are some of the successes and sensations, controversies and heartaches. Author Joseph Romanos has bravely attempted to rank our top 50 Olympic Legends, arguably a very subjective exercise. What’s not to be argued is that all 50 Legends featured deserve a place among our elite sports heroes.

Joseph Romanos
Joseph Romanos has had a long career as a sports writer, working for newspapers and magazines in New Zealand, Australia, and England. He briefly lived in Germany with his wife, Gael, where he worked as a professional squash coach. However, the allure of writing about sports drew him back to journalism.
Romanos has a particular affinity for the Olympic Games, having attended ten, starting with Seoul in 1988. He has witnessed the tremendous drama that sport at the highest level produces. A proud Wellingtonian, he notes that he has interviewed at least one athlete from every New Zealand Olympic team, dating back to the first in 1920. He has amassed a vast collection of fascinating stories about successes and failures on the biggest of all sports stages.
Joseph Romanos has authored more than 50 books.
