About The Author

Karen Lee

Karen Lee, MSN, RN, CNRN, is a critical care nurse in Maryland with four years of experience. Her diverse professional background includes roles as a toothbrush and cigar salesperson, graphic designer, event coordinator, budget analyst, research assistant, and doula. She also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for three terms in Panama and the Philippines.

Driven by a deep sense of wanderlust, Karen has backpacked extensively through Southeast Asia, seeking purpose, human connection, and new culinary experiences. During her travels, she learned silat, studied philosophy, and acquired proficiency in ordering food in various languages. These unconventional experiences, particularly witnessing the vulnerability of sick neighbors and friends in rural communities and feeling ill-equipped to help, motivated her to pursue a career in nursing.

Karen earned her master’s degree as a Coverdell Fellow from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She is dedicated to mentoring and advocating passionately for her patients. As an Asian-American, she is proud to contribute to the emerging voices in the literary scene. A selection from her debut work, On Nursing and Becoming, received an honorable mention in the 2025 CRAFT Memoir Excerpt and Essay Contest.
