Critics Review
♦ Zoe has created a house with her blocks complete with swimming pool. She is excited and invites her friends and toys for a party. As her toys arrive first, Zoe realizes that her toys with wheels, such as a boy with a wheelchair and a red car, are unable to reach the top of the house to enjoy the party and the swimming pool. Zoe, who uses a wheelchair herself, finds that she needs to create a ramp for the toys to use. Zoe tries a few designs and goes outside to look at the ramp her home has, copying the design on her papers and using that when creating the ramp for her toys. After some trial and error, Zoe uses her imagination as well as science and math to plan the ramp and then put it together. Zoe’s colorful world is happy and inviting and full of positivity. The Spanish text details what is happening for readers. The conversations Zoe has with her toys and friends are presented as small speech bubbles to show readers which toy is speaking. Zoe and her friends and toys have different skin tones and abilities. A glossary and suggestions for activities are included, as well as information about accessibility, force, and simple machines. VERDICT This fun picture book is an excellent way to share with young readers the ways STEAM is present every day and is sure to inspire readers to make their own creations. A great addition to Spanish collections for children.
