Critics Review
This is a wise commentary on an important book. Birkett’s exposition is both clear and compelling: she shows how Proverbs integrates with all of Scripture and applies Proverbs to modern contexts in numerous skilful ways. Birkett also helpfully negotiates a number of linguistic and theological problems raised by the book. Both pastors and lay people will be greatly helped by this commentary. – Eric Ortlund, Lecturer in Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew, Oak Hill College
Kirsten Birkett is an excellent guide, directing readers along the ways of wisdom and across the landscape of the good life in Proverbs. As an able teacher, she helps readers to think with and through the various materials in Proverbs, to unlock their wisdom, and to discern the treasures of wisdom hidden in Christ. Moreover, she reunites what the Enlightenment put asunder: wisdom and morality. For anyone interested in wisdom, this commentary is an indispensable resource. – Christopher B. Ansberry, Associate Professor of Biblical & Theological Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania
I confess to taking a lucky dip approach to Provers, grabbing at nuggets of wisdom for a quick fix…Birkett has transformed my sloppy wats and helped me to see that Proverbs has structure and progression: a series of wisdom lectures with a particular purpose…Birkett is a skilled expositor who pays careful attention to the Hebrew text, noting nuances otherwise lost in translation without being overly technical. – Rebekah Brown * Evangelicals Now *
