Critics Review

Praise for Releasing What Isn’t Yours

“Wise and visionary. Laurel is a pioneer in healing and includes the essential dimension of the sacred that has been missing for so many.“―Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart and All in This Together

Releasing What Isn’t Yours invites us to explore the many layers of experience that often go unrecognized in everyday life–and in psychotherapy–yet influence us in profound ways. Laurel Parnell is our deeply insightful, wise, and courageous guide whose devotion to healing and illuminating the truth are revealed in this inspirational personal and professional journey to uncover the ways we are inextricably connected across time and space. When these energy patterns go unrecognized, we may become stuck in the chaos and rigidity of the impaired integration of unresolved trauma. Introducing us to the origins and practical steps of her approach of Multidimensional Integrative Healing, the chapters of this book provide useful ways of understanding layers of experience–whether they are mechanisms or metaphors of the mind–that we can tap into to cultivate post-traumatic growth and resilience in our liberated lives.“―Daniel J. Siegel, MD, New York Times-bestselling author of Aware and Mind

“This book serves as both a map and an invitation: a map for understanding how healing can unfold across physical, emotional, somatic, psychological, and spiritual realms; and an invitation to trust the innate intelligence within each of us that moves toward wholeness when given the right support.
Laurel’s writing is grounded, wise, and accessible, making complex multidimensional concepts feel natural and empowering.
For anyone who has experienced trauma, for clinicians seeking to expand their therapeutic repertoire, or for spiritual practitioners longing for a bridge between profound inner experience and psychological integration, this book is a gift. Laurel Parnell has once again illuminated a path toward reclaiming our authenticity, our agency, and the radiant presence of our True Self.“―Diane Poole Heller, PhD, author of The Power of Attachment and Healing Your Attachment Wounds, creator of the Dynamic Attachment Re-patterning experience (DARe) approach, founder of Trauma Solutions

“In this revolutionary guidebook, Laurel Parnell offers an artful synthesis that unites ancient wisdom with contemporary trauma healing. Releasing What Isn’t Yours integrates decades of her pioneering EMDR teaching, and illuminates ways to heal trauma as a doorway to our True Nature–that unchanging essence which is already whole and free within us. This is a cutting-edge book that helps us discover where awakening and therapeutic healing converge–an important contribution. Highly recommended for anyone looking for support to live an authentic life.“―Loch Kelly, MDiv, LCSW, author of Shift into Freedom and creator of the Mindful Glimpses app

“Laurel Parnell has written the most accessible and practical book addressing EMDR, Spirituality, Energetic Boundaries, Dreamwork, and more.
She has provided a new integrative roadmap to help all of us address multidimensional problems. As a leading therapist and trainer, Laurel has once again shed light on such underrepresented topics as Shamanism in combination with therapy and how to release unwanted spirit attachments. Most importantly Laurel has given us all the tools to align with our TRUE SELF when facing any distress. This is a highly compelling book and a must-have for therapists and clients alike.“―Jennifer Freed, PhD, bestselling author of A Map to Your Soul

“The great alchemical formula of spiritual practice is turning our suffering into compassion and wisdom. Releasing What Isn’t Yours is a powerful example of how one can transform tragedy into a gift that will benefit many. Laurel Parnell went through one of the most painful human experiences imaginable. Through her journey of healing, this skillful and highly respected therapist integrated a number of supportive modalities into an original and profound therapeutic approach. I highly recommend this book.“―James Baraz, co-author of Awakening Joy: 10 Steps to Happiness; co-founder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California

“A pioneer in the fields of EMDR and transpersonal psychology, Dr. Parnell’s life was turned upside down with the traumatic loss of her adult son to violence. This catalyzed an unconventional and profound healing journey that led her to engage with some of the deepest dimensions of the human psyche. This book is the fruit of that journey–an original, multidimensional, and integrative approach that offers a wide range of subtle healing modalities for the general public as well as therapists. Dr. Parnell’s dedication, sensitivity, and love radiate in every page, empowering readers’ self-healing and trust in their inner knowing.“―John J. Prendergast, PhD, author of Your Deepest Ground, The Deep Heart, and In Touch

“With compassion and wisdom, Laurel shows how many of the burdens we carry–trauma, emotional entanglements, and inherited family patterns–may not truly belong to us. Through evocative exercises and compelling case histories, she reveals how even our deepest wounds can become springboards for healing, growth, and freedom. This is a wise, courageous, and deeply transformative book. I highly recommend it for both professional use, as well as personal enquiry and growth.”–Dawson Church, PhD, best-selling author of Spiritual Intelligence
