Born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, Laurie Lee is the author of some of the most cherished travel books in the English language. He received his education at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. At nineteen, he embarked on a journey to London and subsequently traversed Spain on foot, only to be caught in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. His escape involved crossing the Pyrenees, an experience he later detailed in A Moment of War.
Lee’s poetic contributions include four collections: The Sun My Monument (1944), The Bloom of Candles (1947), My Many-Coated Man (1955), and Pocket Poems (1960). His broader literary works encompass The Voyage of Magellan (1948), The Firstborn (1964), I Can’t Stay Long (1975), and Two Women (1983). His autobiographical trilogy, comprising the bestselling Cider with Rosie (1959) – which has achieved over six million sales globally – As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969), and A Moment of War (1991), further solidified his reputation.
