Little Women

Louisa May Alcott, an American writer and poet, was born on November 22, 1832. Her parents were Bronson Alcott, a transcendentalist preacher and teacher, and Abby May Alcott, a social worker. Both parents were involved in the reform movements of the 1800s.

Despite her father’s idealism, the family experienced poverty for extended periods. At the age of 15, Louisa vowed to support her parents and three sisters through any means necessary, including sewing, writing, and teaching. She was homeschooled, developing a passion for reading and using writing as a form of expression. Many prominent writers and intellectuals of the era, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne, were family friends and influenced her thinking and education.

In 1868, Alcott published “Little Women,” an autobiographical novel that achieved significant success, bringing her the fame and financial security she desired for her family. The novel’s portrayal of the March sisters and their close family relationships offered a glimpse into her own life. “Little Women” remains her most beloved and recognized work to date, earning her widespread acclaim.

The success of “Little Women” led to further narratives drawing from her life, including “Little Men,” “Eight Cousins,” and “Jo’s Boys.” A strong advocate for women’s rights, Louisa May Alcott passed away in Boston on March 6, 1888, just two days after her father’s death.
