Madeleine L'Engle
Madeleine L’Engle was the author of over forty-five books for all ages. Her notable works include the Newbery Medal winner A Wrinkle in Time, the Newbery Honor Book A Ring of Endless Light, the American Book Award winner A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and the Austin family series, featuring Troubling a Star as the fifth book. In 1998, L’Engle received the Margaret A. Edwards Award, recognizing her lifetime contribution to young adult literature.
Born in New York City in 1918, L’Engle penned her first novel, The Small Rain, while on tour with Eva Le Gallienne in Uncle Harry. She met her husband, Hugh Franklin, during a rehearsal for The Cherry Orchard. They married on tour during a performance of The Joyous Season, starring Ethel Barrymore.
After her marriage, L’Engle retired from acting. She and her husband moved to northwest Connecticut, where they opened a general store. The family later returned to New York after a decade in Connecticut.
L’Engle divided her time between New York City and Connecticut, serving as the librarian and writer-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. She passed away on September 7, 2007, at the age of 88.
